Used in the area of woodworking as designation for a method of construction of CNC-machining centres. The term "Gantry" comes from the english language and stood originally for a both-sided mounted supporting structure for scaffolds and loading cranes. Today for this method of construction the term "moving gantry machine" is rather common.

A moving gantry has a both-side mounted and powered gantry, which moves over a fixed machine table, the linear axes are realised through the gantry as well as through one at it moved aggregates support. For financial reasons so called "artificial" moving gantrys often only use one drive. That powers either only one side of the gantry or a centrally positioned engine transfers the power via gears or belts to both sides of the gantry.

Until the beginning of the 2000s the market share of the moving gantrys was rather low, because this method of construction was prior used for high-quality, heavy and thus expensive machines with a medium working range. For cheaper machines mostly the method of construction "cantilever machine" was used, while for heavy machines with a large working range the method of construction "fix gantry, moving table" came into operation.

About the mid of the 2000s due to changed safety regulations a new trend for cantilever machines towards small, cheaper moving gantrys began. In the appropriate leaflets of the manufacturers mostly the term moving gantry machine was used. Therefore this term became accepted generally.
