Air cushion pad

Air cushion pads are used in sanding pad aggregates of wide belt sanders and narrow belt sanding machines. There are two different types of air cushion pads.

1. Air cushion integrated into the sanding pad

The sanding pad is designed as a tub into which an inflatable cushion is inserted. It is covered by the sanding pad insert, which consists of a steel strip, felt and a graphite cloth. The sanding belt runs across the graphite cloth.

Advantage The air in the cushion evenly distributes the sanding pressure on the workpiece.
Disadvantage Without an appropriate workpiece scanner and an appropriate control of the sanding pad, sensitive border areas or cut-out areas are not recognized.

It is primarily used in solid wood processing. Thin veneers, lacquer finish etc. are preferably processed with electronic sanding pads.

2. Free air cushion AEROSTAT

In this method, compressed air flows against the sanding belt through nozzles in the sanding pad. Thus, it is inflated by up to 3 mm. According to the manufacturer Johannsen's information, better sanding results occur than with integrated air cushions. This method is a worldwide patent of Johannsen.

Advantages No sanding through of veneer, no rounding of the edges of the workpieces, lower energy consumption of the sanding belt drive
