Turnplate cutters are offered in a variety of versions for various applications. There are non-resharpenable turnplate cutters, which have to be disposed when all cutting edges are blunted, but also resharpenable turnplate cutters.

Turnplate cutters are usually clamped into the tool about a tight fit (drilling, profile).

Tools with turnplate cutters are used in:

- wood waste grinders - four side planers - moulders - surface planers - thickness planers

As single cutting plates, sometimes in combination with conventional knives, turnplate cutters can be found, for example, for composite window sets, in tools for CNC machining centers, as pre-cutters in profile cutters.

Use in planing machines

When used in planing machines, turnplate cutters play a special role, since here, the precise alignment of all cutters in a circle is decisive for the quality of processing. For the precise alignment and clamping, different systems have been developed:

• Turnplate cutters with tight fit and adjustment screws: system Barke, Brück: The planer knives have holes through which the cutters are clamped into a special cutter holder by tight fit. With adjustment screws, the planer knife can be easily adjusted. When using identical cutters, a new adjustment is no longer necessary when changing.
• Centrifugal clamping systems: Samvaz Tersa, Leitz Centrofix/ Centrostar/ Centrolock/ Quickfix, Terminus, Kanefusa: It is disposable knives, which are precisely positioned in a circle by a profile. The cutters are clamped by wedges, which are clamped by the centrifugal force of the rotating tools.
• Constant cutting circle systems: Leitz Variplan: It is a resharpenable turnplate cutter system, which keeps the circle constant up to a certain mark during sharpening by a special clamping system. A readjustment of the machine after sharpening is therefore not required.
