By means of the multi-stage technology in edgebanders, it is possible to process different edge profiles without a tool change. This is realized by tools, which contain the desired profiles on multiple stages and have control motors, which position the tools according to the profile stage.

The multi-stage technology is used in the following edge processing aggregates:

• Fine milling aggregates, radius milling aggregates, chamfering milling aggregates (flush/radius/chamfer milling units)
• edge rounding units
• Profile scraper aggregates

The multi-stage technology is now (as of 2015) offered by the following manufacturers, among others:

• BiesseEdge: system multi profile knives
• IMA: MFA multifunctional aggregate
• HOLZ-HER: multifunctional milling aggregate
• Stefani (SCM Group): Multiedge, Multipla

While the manufacturer Brandt distinguishes between multi-stage technology and multifunctional aggregates, other manufacturers mix the terms for multistage tools and multiple functions of one aggregate.
