Chipboard production | wood yard

Chipboard

For the production of wood based materials such as chipboard, forest wood, recycled wood and industrial wood (residual sawdust) are processed. A study by the EPF (European Panel Federation) has shown that in 2011 German chipboards consisted of 19% forest wood, 48% industrial wood and 33% waste wood. The trend towards processing waste wood continues to increase.

Material

The processed material used has a decisive influence on the panel properties. In order to combine the technical with the economic aspects, it is common to have a material mix. The following materials can be considered for chipboard production:

  • Wood: Spruce, pine, beech, birch, poplar, fir, douglas fir, alder, willow, larch
  • Woody raw materials: flax, hemp, rice straw, papyrus, hibiscus, bamboo
  • Annual plants: Grains, cane sugar/bagasse, reed
  • Wood-like raw materials: cotton, oil palm, date palm

These reach the chipboard plants in the form of planing and saw chips, wood chips, slabbings, splinters, roundwood or as material residues (recycled wood).

OSB

The use of the type of wood depends on the location

  • Europe: fresh forest wood (pine)
  • USA: Aspen, Whitewood
  • South America: Plantation pines, eucalyptus
  • literature: Alder, poplar, maple, sycamore, Douglas fir

Before the forest wood is processed into strands, the trunks are debarked.
