With the help of the multi-stage technology on edgebanders it is possible to process different edge profiles without tool change. This is realized by tools, which contain the desired profiles in steps and pneumatic cylinders or NC controlled actuators, which position the tools according to the profile steps.

The multi-stage technology is used in the following edge processing units:

• Precision milling units, radius milling units, chamfering aggregates (flush/radius/chamfering stations)
• Corner rounding units
• Profile scraper aggregates

The multi-stage technology is currently (as of 2015) offered by the following manufacturers, among others:

• HOLZ-HER Weinig Group: Multifunctional milling technology and multi profile tool
• Homag Group: Multi-stage technology
• IMA Schelling Group: MFA 08.348 Multiple machining aggregate
• SCM Group: Multiedge, Multipla

While the Homag Group makes a distinction between multi-stage technology and multi-function units, other manufacturers mix the terms for multi-stage tools and several functions in one unit.
