Melamine laminates mainly consist of several layers of paper drenched or coated with melamine resin.
Material properties
- High abrasion resistance which can be increased through adding corundum (known as abrasive grain)
- Odourless
- Heat and moisture resistant
- Insensitive to stains and light
- High torsional stiffness
- Low flexibility (compared to ABS plastic)
- Paper can be printingin any colour and with any pattern
- Through embossing the haptics of natural materials can be imitated
- Resistant to common household chemicals
Construction
The construction varies depending on the use. However, this sequence is the same for all melamine laminates (from the face side to the base):
- Overlay paper (melamine resin wetted, transparent, abrasion resistant)
- Overlay papers (printed, melamine coated)
- Core paper (cellulose webs drenched with melamine resin)
- Backing paper (fiber flow opposite to the core paper)
