Premilling

Joint cutting levels the narrow sides of a workpiece that it can be fitted together with a similar workpiece without gap. For this process milling tools are used.

Following some examples of joint cutting on diverse woodworking machines:

Veneer saws

To get glue-ready veneer edges, some veneer saws are equipped with a premilling unit.

Edgebanding machines

Wood-based panels for furniture construction are formatted on sliding table saws or beamsaws, and then, for edgebanding, transported to edgebanders or edge processing lines. This is done in stacks, using transportation carts, or plate by plate with conveyors. During the processes of storage and transportation, it may come to slight damages to the workpiece edge. To eliminate those before the edgebanding, premilling units are used, which mill the workpiece edge splinter-free. Because of this, even smaller machines are more and more equipped with premilling units.

The chip removal during premilling comes to approximately 1 mm.

Alternative terms

  • Pre-milling: Machines of some German manufacturers have got a "V" in their type designation when equipped with a premilling unit. It is not to be confused with flush milling, which is sometimes also labeled as such.
