Wide belt sander

Machine for the sanding of surfaces of flat workpieces, starting at a working width of approx. 500 mm.

Depending on the configuration with rollers (rubber roller, steel roller), sanding pads, (standard cross-belts), brushing units, cutterblock planer aggregate, etc. there are several applications.

  • 'machines for joiners and crafts' (typical configuration):
  • aggregates working in up-cut direction
  • working width 1100mm
  • combination aggregate with timed pad or
  • 1 contact roller and a timed use air cushion pad or segmental pressure pad
  • 'Machines for industrial use''
  • individual configurations
  • more powerful motors
  • bigger diameter of the roller, belt rolls, working widths, belt length
  • higher performance regarding the sanding quality through down-cut (because of a belt which is sanding with the feeder direction)
  • double-sided units

Usually the sanding aggregate configuratin is stated on the name plate of the machine or in manufacturer's brochures.

History

1950 Until the mid-1950s such machines usually worked with sanding cylinders (a sanding belt was put around the sanding roller). The German manufacturer Weber was the first company, who introduced a machine like the Wide belt sanders that are used today with a wide belt which at least runs between 2 little rollers.

Applications

  • Solid wood sheets: Calibrating, to reduce the thickness of a workpiece through sanding
  • Solid wood, particle board, plywood panels: Fine sanding with sanding pads, preparation for the application of intermediate filler, paint...
  • Brushing unit: for the removal of dust, smoothing, structuring of solid wood materials

Alternative terms

  • Calibrating sander
  • Fine sanding machine (Bütfering FBS models)
  • Sanding machine (Bütfering, Weber)
  • Sanding belt (Weber)
  • Sanding line (Weber)
  • Cross-sanding machine (Weber)
  • Laquer-sanding machine (Weber)

For surfaces profiled for sanding, wide belt sanders are unsuitable due to their extensively-attacking sanding units, therefore so-called intermediate sanders for surfaces are deployed.
